PERLITE - Refractory / Castable Blending Grade. 2500°F

6 items left

Perlite is white, light, strong, exploded volcanic rock in small spheres that can handle up to 2500°F while retaining its porosity making it a popular add mixture to bedding soil and flowering pots.  It's also found in many creative recipes that require natural, lightweight insulating materials with incredible heat tolerance.

It's a white-light, miniaturized version of volcanic rock popcorn.  Perlite is available in Massive (but only 22 lb Bags) & 5 Gallon Pail sizes.

This is SMALL GRAIN Perlite (less than half the size of typical Horticultural Perlite) is popular for blending with refractories and cement.  While Larger sized Perlite is suitable for gardening, this smaller Perlite is preferred for making much stronger castings.  (It's just nearly impossible to find.)  Though it can still be used for gardening, its real advantage is its ability to blend with refractories and add bulk, good thermal resistance, and improved R-value (insulation coefficients) while maximizing strength.

The smaller grains are optimal for mixing with concrete, plaster, gypsum, hydro stone, and especially refractories because they impart lightness and bulk while maintaining more strength than larger Horticultural-sized Perlite when casting.

It is also commonly used on its own beneath forms, as a component to a packable base, or between layers.  It can be used to fill the spaces in some pizza oven designs, in combination with or instead of refractory wool.  Its thermal efficiency makes it popular in some pizza oven designs allowing exterior finishing with high-character traditional architectural bricks to be protected from the firebox.

We'll have some builds utilizing this build style on display soon.

We are doing some experimenting, and we will have some refractories available premixed with perlite to make fun projects like backyard rocket stoves more affordably than with 100 percent refractory cement, but for now, it's available on its own for you to mix yourself.

Note we also have larger grain traditional 'Horticultural' Perlite available in a smaller quantity for gardening or uses indicating a larger grain size.

22 lb. Bags

Made in Canada.

Note:  The massive bags are too large and fragile to ship via traditional courier, but the 5 gallon pails of Perlite ship great!  The large bags can be picked up in-store, and you can contact us to look into large bag shipping options manually if needed.
