No.36 High Strength 3200°F - Refractory Mortar

No. 36 refractory cement is a ready-to-use extra-strength, air-hardening 3200°F refractory mortar.  It applies smooth with its fine texture.

Think of refractory mortar like 'white glue' in woodworking or as plaster in drywall.  Apply No 36 Mortar in multiple thin layers when a thicker repair is required.  Like when using plaster, this avoids shrinking and cracking.  Thin coats dry quickly.

Mortars are designed to stick chemically.  Most refractories don't 'stick' well to existing castings or bricks; they rely on mechanical junctions (think: dovetail joints).  There are a few exceptions to this rule:  some technical refractories (special order phosphate-bonded products) are also 'sticky' and can adhere to previously cast refractories -contact Sean with any questions).

Refractory mortar is applied very thinly between bricks to hold them together.  (Unlike residential brick mortar (done with aesthetics in mind), refractory mortar between bricks is usually only 1/16" thick.)

Applied to 2300°F IFBs through to 2800°F IFBs (Insulating Fire Bricks) No. 36 Mortar adds durability, strength, abrasion resistance, & heat tolerance, especially when partnered with a thin coat of ITC-100.

Common Applications:

  • the structural mortar between bricks,
  • surface repair/patching compound in forges, kilns, ovens, and foundries.
  • to create Hammon lines on knife blades No. 36 Mortar can be used (similar to ITC 213 or Satanite.
  • It's FINE grain trowels smoothly.

If a softer, more fluid consistency is desired, a small amount of water can be added and thoroughly mixed with No36 mortar. This is why we also sell mortar in oversized pails—so you can have room for a drill mixer in the same product bucket.

No 36 Mortar contains 67% Alumina, and its special binders give it more strength than 'SAIRSET Mortar' (50% Alumina).

  • Colour = Light Grey
  • Wet Mortar 780 psi
  • 1.2% Iron
  • High strength 67% Alumina
  • Air setting
