Made of special alloys and metal coatings: Edge Retention - Resists Rust
Lighter weight. Pferd rasps have BLADES not teeth. They don't tear the hoof, they shave it. Available in 14" and economical 17" sizes.
German PFERD (English Translation: 'Horse') hoof rasps have been made for nearly 150 years, and they are the gold standard.
No more new rasp sticky 'chattering' on the hoof. Used lightly, these rasps will feather across the hoof with an easy leveling glide. If you lean into them, they can also get some serious work done with ease.
With the hoof plane, PFERD presents an innovative, extremely effective, and cost-efficient product for smoothing and shaping horse hooves with a totally different feel.
Some farriers resharpen Pferd Rasps for even more longevity facilitated by the extra hard steel.
While you can argue they are a great value, most people use them because they love the feel and how the rasp seems to make levelling the foot easier.
(Since COVID, most rasps have increased in price by nearly 100%. PFERD rasps have only increased in price by ~15%. Though they are the price of two standard rasps, they last longer than 4x)
TIP: Some companies make anti-rust coatings available on their rasps (Like the Heller Black Master) because left untreated, the humidity in the air will oxidize (rust) the cutting edge of a rasp, and can cause an unused rasp to get dull in the barn. A trick is to simply spray your standard rasp with WD40 or similar before putting it away. Pferd rasps are uniquely immune to surface rust, but because they can last so long, I don't want humidity to affect them, and a WD-40 spray is nearly free...
