Vesuvius Super 3000 #26 - Refractory Mortar

Vesuvius Super 3000 is a wet, high-strength, air-setting fireclay refractory mortar rated to 3100°F.

Other air drying refractory mortars to consider include:

Sairset 3000 Mortar, an industry gold standard @ 3150°F.

No. 36 Mortar.  HWI's high strength version of Sairset.  Finee.  Slightly stronger compressive strengths.  Considered water impermeable once cured and fired.

Resitect 45W Mortar.

 Features:

  • Ideal troweling characteristics for mortar joints in brick linings
  • Add water to the consistency desired (i.e. for dipping).

Common Applications:

  • Laying high-duty, super-duty, high-fired super-duty, and alumina firebrick.
  • Used as a brick joint mortar, repairing cracks/joints in boilers, industrial furnaces, kilns, flues, and stacks.
  • Ideal as a general-purpose refractory mortar.

Application Methods:

  • Ready to use/apply as is, or can be mixed with water to thin it out.
  • Some will take a shallow container, mix a little water, and dip the bricks in to get a thin, even coating on contact surfaces before stacking.

Note:

  • Only apply evenly to the contact surfaces of your refractory bricks, not the wall.
  • Only apply a thin layer up to 1/16'' of depth max. It has a thinner consistency, not thick like regular mortar.
  • When coating 5 of the six sides of a brick, plan on ~1/2 lb mortar per brick.

Domes:

When building a brick dome, like a Pizza Oven, many masons prefer a good medium-density refractory such as KS4V+ because it cures much stronger, filling deep wedges and not shrinking.  A castable is structural, whereas mortar is like glue.

Storage:

Since this is an air-set mortar (does not require heat to set, and only a minimal heat dry out to hard cure), if you have any leftovers, it's essential to seal them up. It's recommended that you add a light skim of water on top of the mortar, put the lid on tight, and then wrap around the cover with electrical tape or similar.

If stored at room temperature, it should last a long time. Remember to mix well before using it again.

Sizes Available:

  • 1 Gallon Pail = 16 lbs  (48 bricks on average).
  • 2 Gallon Pail = 32 lbs (96 bricks on average).
