Insulating Fire Bricks (IFBs): 9" x 4.5" (Thickness 2.5" & 3") 2300. 2600 & 2800°F

2" & 3" Thick Efficient Lightweight IFB (Insulated Fire Brick) 9" x 4.5" x 3" Used both as insulation backing and hot face refractory insulation applications (especially when '**FORTIFIED').  Easy to cut & shape. The low iron content is also suitable for reducing and high CO environments.

TIPs:

  • 2300°F IFBs are lighter than 2600°F or 2800°F IFBs.

  • Although 2300°F IFBs are not rated for full 2450°F propane forge temperatures (consider 2600° or 2800°F), they are the lightest and best IFB insulators, and can be optimal for Heat Treating ovens and backup insulation in higher temperature applications.

  • When needed, IFBs can be hard-surfaced with thinset 3200°F mortar &/or ITC 100 (5000°F) to elevate their working temperature range and surface abrasion resistance.

  • **FORTIFY your 2300°F Bricks - Added Heat Capacity, Abrasion Resistance, and Strength:  Coat the hot face of the brick with either Mortar (3100°F)  (i.e., HD DC 50-3200 Mortar, etc.) + a thin topcoat of ITC-100 and turn soft /friable IFBs into abrasion-resistant IFBs with improved thermal capacity.

  • 3" IFBs are a popular and economical option for heat-treating & tempering ovens.  You have enough depth to router /carve channels in the bricks for heating coils.

These bricks are more porous and more fragile than our 3000°F+ high-density fire bricks, but they insulate extremely well.  Although not very tolerant to vibration, they can sustain moderately high compressive forces, whether dry-stacked or set with mortar, and have insulation values approaching those of wool.   Being lighter, they don't act like the heat sink of dense bricks, but they are also brought to temperature much faster.

Once people have tried applying ITC-100, the ceramic reflective top coating, on the fire side of IFBs and realized the fuel savings it offers, ITC becomes a component coating on all their future builds.

Properties

  • 4.5" Wide x 9" Long x 2.5" Thick or 3.0" Thick
  • Available in various temperature ratings
  • Easy to cut/shape with wood tools (mist with water to limit dust).

Sold Individually.

Note - If this location runs out of stock, purchases may take two days to ship to allow for stock transfer.

Note - Upon Request, these Bricks can be professionally cut into slices or shapes to suit.  Unlike dense firebricks, these IFBs are easy to cut with simple wood saws.   A wide blade band saw is brilliant, a course tooth blade (3 TPI is best for dry cuts to minimize dust, but a 1/2" wide blade with 14 tpi etc will still cut it fine, as will most hand saws). A wide blade keeps cuts straight.

Note -  Ever considered slicing bricks in half and mortaring 1.25" of a 2300 and 1.25" of a 2600 or 2800°F IFB together?  Hi temp to fireside and 2300 as back up for a bit of insulation efficiency finesse.
